It’s still early days for Skyrim as yet, so a sequel is probably not on the cards. Nor do we need one. The game is so big it’s likely to last until the next one is out.
What we are likely to see however are updates, patches, and expansions. Pretty much more stuff to add to the already huge and amazing game.
Combat
Dual Wielding
Dual Wielding was supposed to be a major new exciting selling point to Skyrim.
In some ways I’m enjoying it, in others it’s a little frustrating.
I like being able to heal with my left hand and destroy with my right, but I don’t like it that in order to do so I have to sheathe my sword and shield.
In Oblivion your character could cast spells while still holding their weapons. I’d like to go back to that.
In essence I think what I want is Quad Wielding. A sword and a destruction spell in my right hand, a shield and a healing spell in my left.
Quick Keys
This isn’t a problem for PC users. They have them.
On PS3 however, all we have is the favourites list. At least it’s something.
The problem is, my favourites list contains near enough everything I have at my disposal. The reason being that scrolling down the favourites list with everything on it is still faster than going into the menu, then the magic menu, then the conjuration menu or whatever and picking a spell.
This isn’t entirely true. PS3 has two quick keys, which I have made great use of.
Usually I patrol carrying axe and shield. My quick keys provide me with an attack spell and a healing spell.
The problem is, I then have to go into one of the menus or the favourites list to get my weapons re-equipped.
I’d prefer it if I could tap the quick key a second time to bring back my axe.
As it stands, tapping a second time equips the same spell in both hands.
When being beared down upon by a Sabre Cat, having two healing spells is somewhat useful, but it doesn’t solve the pressing issue!
Shields
Isn’t the purpose of a shield to take the brunt of a hit so that you don’t take damage?
There is one perk which allows shields to deflect arrows without hurting you but that’s it.
Why is it that when I guard I still have a massive chunk of health lopped off?
I suppose it’s to do with the RPG mechanic of the game, but I’d rather the shield be more effective.
Your Character
Viewing
In Oblivion, when you were choosing what your man (or woman) would wear, you could see him (or her) and rotate to get a good look. I thought this was a great.
Now in Skyrim you are able to see and rotate each individual item, which is also great.
Now if there was an option to switch between views, that would be double great. It’s only a minor aesthetic niggle and not all that important, but in game you don’t get much chance to see your Dragonborn in their shiny new armour.
Titles
At the moment I am Thane of Whiterun, Thane of Winterhold, Thane of Riften, Arch Mage of the College of Winterhold, a member of the Companions Circle, and an initiate of the Thieves Guild.
I have to remember all that. It would be nice if in the stats menu there was a list of the things that I am. I might have even missed something!
Clothing
This is a bit nitpicky, and it would again be something that might actually negatively effect the RPG side of things, but it doesn’t make sense to me that you can only wear one layer of certain items.
Why couldn’t you wear a magic shirt underneath your heavily armoured chainmail? Why must you be naked underneath?
We have 8 fingers and two thumbs, why can we only wear one ring?
And so on…
Followers
Character
In the two Fallout games there weren’t all that many people you could take on as followers, which meant that the characters were more developed and had more to say.
In Skyrim, the followers tend to have one phrase for every situation and it gets quite repetitive. You also don’t get a whole lot of an idea of what they are about.
When it comes to the marriage aspect of the game, you don’t feel as though there are many (if any) that are interesting enough to want to marry.
Levelling
I may need to be corrected on this, but from what I have heard, the followers do not level with the player as you adventure. Rather they jump to the level of the player when you first hire them and stay that way for the rest of the game.
Which means if you meet a follower that you like at level 5, then by the time you get to level 30 (probably before) you should have fired them because they aren’t much help any more. This is a shame if you like the person you have with you.
Waiting/Dismissing
I understand the reasons why followers will go home if you leave them waiting somewhere for too long.
Firstly, in role playing terms, they might get bored and fed up with staying in one place.
Secondly, in gaming terms it means that if you forgot where you left them, you know you can go back to where they live to find and rehire them.
I’d prefer it though if you could choose where they went in the same way you do in Fallout: New Vegas. I liked having all the allies partying in the casino suite, so I wouldn’t mind a few friends crashing at Breezehome.
This in particular goes for the dog companions. It would be great to have the dog at home by the fire when the enemies outside have become too strong for him. This would be useful for dogs that you have to buy in particular. If you dismiss a dog that you paid for, it will go back to its original owner and if you wish to use it again, you have to pay AGAIN.
It might get a little crowded in those little medievil houses, so perhaps there could be a limit on how many can stay in any given one, but still, I’d rather have the one place as a base of operations instead of dashing all over the country.
Enemies
Giants
Do they all have to look exactly the same? Are there no individuals among giantkind?
Bugs and Glitches Fixes
Bethesda are getting a reputation for bringing out hugely buggy games.
It’s not surprising though considering how much they put into them!
There are bound to be a few crossed wires.
The problem comes when they release patches, but the bugs that are bothering YOU in particular aren’t seen to!
I’m fairly sure there is a bug in New Vegas that hasn’t been addressed that meant I could not complete a quest.
What I think needs to be done is for whoever the Bethesda bug fixing team are, to be checking the Elder Scrolls Wiki pages. At the bottom of most articles is a list of relevant bugs and glitches.
They don’t need to find them, the players are doing it for them! All they need do is fix the problems.
