Movies In Which God Saved The Day

BEWARE: SPOILERS!

What with atheism being in fashion now, all the silliness coming from the Vatican and the terrorist attacks apparently asked for by Allah, God is getting a bad rep.

So we would like to remind you of some of the good He has done in some of our favourite flicks.

Spoilers will be rife as we ruin the endings to a few films here.

I Am Legend

Will Smith’s character, Robert Neville, starts out as a non-believer living in a world that has been all but destroyed by man’s meddling in science. To be fair, they had good intentions. They were trying to cure cancer with another virus.
The virus they created however, turned out to be worse and turned people into zombie, monster vampire things. That’s a lesson to test things properly before releasing them in public. (Why does Bethesda come to mind?)

Neville wanders with only his dog for a companion until he meets a woman, Anna, who tells him that God led them to each other.

In the final showdown, Neville receives his own message from God, seeing imagery of butterflies and piecing together what he is meant to do.

Time Bandits

Referred to as ‘The Supreme Being’ rather than God, but pretty much amounting to the same thing, for most of the film he appears as a frightful floating face bellowing at the little thieves to return his map.

Remember, ‘Thou shalt not steal’ is one of the Ten Commandments, so it’s pretty decent of The Supreme Being to be forgiving as ever when some of his supposedly faithful servants run off with one of his most important artifacts.
He even resurrects one of them from death, before giving them their old jobs back. Maybe he enjoyed watching their adventure as much as we did.

He’s even nice enough to answer the question about why evil has to exist in the world. What a lovely God.

In this blockbuster everyone raves about, the day was won after a prayer.

Bruce Almighty

In this film, God gives Bruce (Jim Carrey) his powers for a limited time, to see if the man can do a better job than Him.
At first Bruce has a lot of fun, but soon learns of all the responsibility involved with being in charge of looking after the entire world. He finds that it’s beyond any individuals capability to make a perfect world and give everyone what they want. He discovers the importance of free will and how it’s sometimes difficult to have an affect when you can’t let it control someone’s destiny.

In the end, Bruce is happy to hand the power back to God, who carries on being his loving and understanding self.

Dogma

Two fallen angels try to use a loophole in the Catholic dogma to re-enter heaven. What they don’t realise is their actions would prove that God is fallible and cause creation to be undone.

God sets Bethany, a non-believer, on a quest to save the universe in which she meets prophets, an apostle and angels before discovering that she is the last descendant of Jesus Christ.

In the final scenes, God leads the group to victory and restores faith to Bethany by saving her from death and restoring her ability to give birth.
