SPOILERS ABOUND
The next road was again patrolled by City Watch on regular duty. I used my Blink ability to gain the higher ground and get a good view of the area.
I overheard them speaking of a brand which if marked onto an Overseer would have them discharged for life in disgrace.
Though killing Campbell would be satisfying in its way, dishonouring him as he had done me would serve as a greater punishment for his crimes against me and more importantly the Empress.
I sneakily dispatched one of the guards on patrol, though my attempts at stealth failed the for the second and I was once again forced to use deadly means.
I placed the sleeping man in a trash unit alongside the dead man, not envying the fear and confusion which would overcome him on his wake.
I Blinked up high to spy out the next square.
I was aware that another guard was inside the building I was stood on. If I could sneak past the guards in the square I may be spotted by the man inside. I felt it would be wise to deal with him before going any further.
He was an easy target, so I lay him to slumber alongside the other men in the bin.
Inside the building I found a note for the guards on duty. It seemed the Overseer’s true plans were being kept quiet. Probably for the best from his point of view.
I also found a device called a springrazor which would serve as a deadly trap if I felt need for it.
I exited the building through the door that led into the square. I noticed a path leading below the square which seemed to be the ideal stealthy route.
I didn’t, put I did find a convenient place to pickpocket a guard. He was carrying a healthy 100 coin.
I came to the end of the passage and found a door.
This would lead me back into the square, but at least I was closer to my target.
Sneaking around the peripherals I discovered an opening that led towards a store room. At the end of which, I saw a secret room owned by Campbell used for his more corrupt and debauched pastimes. Inside was a rune.
Inside I heard voices searching for the diary I was looking for. I could not gain access this way, but I already knew that they would not find it here.
I carried on sneaking towards the entrance, the guards completely unaware of my presence.
Inside I found some overseers with some prisoners. One was giving a speech which I gave little notice to.
Spotting an elixir on a shelf I silently crept forwards to take it.
I inadvertently made a noise though and slipped into a side room before being found. The guards were now alert however and searching.
One by one, as they entered the room that I had in, I put them to sleep and secreted them in a corner.
I then made my way upstairs where I would find the High Overseer. Up here, I had an easier way around, using height to my advantage,.
First I had to find the branding instructions, so that I may carry out the procedure correctly. They were kept in a library, guarded by three men.
Patiently, I waited until they had wandered to different posts before Blinking down, grabbing the tome and Blinking back to my position unseen.
Ready with the information, I proceeded to the High Overseer’s Office. It was not long before the Overseer and the Captain arrived.
I would have to act fast if I was to save the Captain from whatever fate the Overseer had in store for him.
I Blinked down behind Campbell and grabbed him, putting him to rest. In the meantime, the Captain fled realising what I had done for him.
Now I needed to get Campbell to the Interrogation Room where I could brand him.
In his office, I found a rune, which I used to learn a new ability. I could now slow time itself. I felt this might come in handy while I tried to carry an unconscious official through the building.
The sounds outside the office led me to believe guards may be coming my way at any moment. I decided to hide the Overseer in a dark corner while I checked that my route was clear first.
I silently knocked out a few guards and hid them in the same dark corner. The route seemed clear enough at this stage so I hoisted the man onto my shoulder again and set off.
Unfortunately, I came across a guard that I had missed and circumstances led to a duel.
I arrived at the interrogation room..
and placed the Overseer in it.
Assumedly someone found the decapitated body I had left in the corridor as I heard an alarm sound. I had to hurry.
The branding equipment was in a room overlooking the chamber. Fortunately I was able to Blink over the bars and grab the gear with ease.
With haste, I took hold of the Overseer’s head and proceeded to brand him. As I did so, two guards rushed in to stop me.
I could not leave witnesses of my act. The whole thing could be exposed as fraud.
The alarm was still going and I needed to escape fast. I dashed back into the library, where I managed to Blink up to my previous hiding place. Somehow though, a guard this time spotted me and I had to dispatch him via blade.
Preparing to hide from any more guards, I moved further into the room where I found a document concerning me.
I managed to get past the remainder of the upstairs guards unnoticed and started heading back to the lower level.
I saw two prisoners being kept under watch by two patrolling guards.
I knocked out the guards one by one, but the prisoners seemed to frightened to flee.
All I had to do now was get to Samuel at the meeting place behind the building. However, I was still interested in finding the Overseer’s secret room.
While I searched I felt it would be morally acceptable to steal the contents of the corrupt Overseer’s collection box.
A set of stairs led me downstairs towards the place I thought I would find the rune and the Overseer’s secret room. An unusual bust stood in the corner.
Pressing it’s eye opened a doorway into the room and I was free to explore.
Lingerie littered the ground. It was clear to me of what some of the activities were that took place in here.
The rune was kept in an ornate case along with some other valuables.
I smashed the glass, took my prizes and rushed back to the exit where I hoped Samuel would not be far.
Out here, there were a number of guards with dangerous dogs. I thought I might go straight to find Samuel, but the heart revealed that I could find some more goods if I explored a little.
I was able to Blink and sneak my way across the rooftops, unfortunately having to murder one guard on the way who spotted me and found the place where the charm was.
It was surrounded by plagued rats. I Blinked may way around the room staying stood on top of debris and workbenches.
Fortunately this was sufficient and I was able to reach the charm.
It was held in a vice, which when I loosened it, allowed the charm to unfortunately drop into a pile of dung. I grabbed the charm fast and before leaving the building, I cut down a few of the horrid creatures.
I snuck back across the rooftops towards the workshop where the rune would be found. The door required a key so I was unable to enter by conventional means.
Back onto the roof I found another way in. I broke through the glass ceiling and dropped in.
Inside, I found the door key.
Smashing the bottle seemed to alert the guards outside, but they left alone after I hid silently for a moment.
Using the rune I strengthened my Dark Vision ability, allowing me to pick out certain useful objects at a distance.
In the room I found a chilling note.
I also found a wheel and a note explaining that it was to be used to open a door at the docks where it seemed something valuable may be kept.
I decided to carry the wheel with me, hoping to discover the secret it might uncover.
On exiting the building using the key, I clumsily dropped the wheel. The sound alerted a nearby guard, so I grabbed it again and dashed inside to take cover until the man lost interest.
Using my Dark Vision I saw him come towards the entrance. At this time I was in a poor hiding spot, so I dropped the wheel, much more gently this time, and made for a darker corner of the room.
I expected the guard to check the room and leave. He did not.
Instead, he took up watch just feet away from where I had left the wheel…
I wanted that wheel back, so tired of waiting, I decided to take him out.
With great caution, I attempted to stealthily knocked the guard into a stupor. At the last moment I was spotted and had to resort to my blade to end things quickly.
Now I was free to grab the wheel and make my escape.
No such luck. Again, as I left a guard approached, this time with one of those mangy hounds.
I returned to my hiding place and held my breath as the dog sniffed about for me.
The pair passed me by, but now were drawing close to the body of the other guard.
Inevitably, they found him and their search for me became more pressing.
Concerned about the possibility of the dog being explosive, I opted to not face the enemy but make a dash for the door as I was still out of sight.
I made it and finally the coast was clear, so I continued sneaking away.
Around the corner another guard and dog were on patrol.
I was in a vulnerable position and wanted to get back to a higher vantage point, out of sight and reach.
Above was a rooftop that I felt would be ideal. I first threw the wheel up onto it before Blinking myself up.
Hoping that I would find the place to put the wheel, I dropped down behind a wall and began searching. Inside a building I found a small gap into an otherwise innaccessible room.
I could not fit through, but by means of one of my powers, I could gain easy entry.
I took on the form of a rat and passed through without trouble.
Beside the body of the man was a note.
The fools greed had been his undoing. For a moment I feared the same fate not seeing any rats on this side of the wall.
I was however able to break through a boarded window and make an exit.
I walked on along the pathway, still hoping for a sign of this door.
Looking down I saw where Samuel stood waiting for me.
Perhaps the door would be down there. They had mentioned docks after all.
I dropped the wheel and climbed down after it. I found no door.
The choices were to continue seeking or cut my losses and leave this place while I was still being hunted for.
I dumped the damned wheel and made my way.
Overall I had been quite successful. Campbell had been removed from power, Overseer Martin had been rescued and Captain Curnow yet lived.
