Recreating An Accurate Springfield in ‘The Simpsons: Tapped Out’ – Part 12

springfield - dont fear the rooferPlan ahead! There’s a lot of stuff to fit in to your town and only limited space.
We’re also in a position that we don’t know what new stuff will be released in the future.

Recently, the ‘nuke’ button has been added so that we can rebuild almost from scratch if we decide that we don’t like how the town has come out. After a lot of work on your town, that might be something that you want to avoid.

In this section, I’m going to include some updates of buildings and areas that I have finished, but are at risk of being temporarily demolished if I drop a nuke.

Springfield Landscapes

Having a look at some of the canon layouts of the town might help you figure out how you want to put yours together.

Town Square, Elementary, and Evergreen Terrace

According to the episode ‘A Tale of Two Springfields’ characters who live on the rich side of town include:
Bill and Marty, Mrs. Hoover, Sideshow Mel, Mr. Burns, Skinner, Mrs. Krabappel, Prof. Frink, Mr. Largo, Apu and Manjula, Chief Wiggum, Mayor Quimby, Jimbo, Kearny, Dolph, and Kent Brockman.
And for the poorer side of Springfield: Captain McAllister, Patty and Selma, the Simpsons, Disco Stu, Groundskeeper Willie, Fat Tony, Eddie and Lou, Lenny, Carl, Barney, Otto, Dr. Nick Rivera, Flanders, Mr. Van Houten, Moe, Bumblebee Man, Jasper, Hans, and Comic Book Guy.
However, as Chief Wiggum lives on Evergreen Terrace, I’m not sure how this works.

Murdered: Soul Suspect – PS4 Review

Murdered: Soul Suspect

Also available on: PC, PS3, X360, XO
Released 6/6/2014

5/10

‘Murdered: Soul Suspect’ is a supernatural detective thriller from Square Enix and Airtight Games following in the footsteps of titles like ‘Heavy Rain’ and ‘Alan Wake’, focusing on a more story-driven, thinking persons game-play experience.

If you’re an action loving player, this one is definitely not going to impress. ‘Murdered: Soul Suspect’ eases you in to the very simple format, introducing you to the controls, the story, and the main characters at a pace that lets you know there is no need to rush. At first, it feels as though it takes a while for the game to get going, but if it’s intensity you’re after, it doesn’t push you much harder later either. There is an element of danger introduced in the shape of demons, but it feels almost tacked on to break up the more interesting detective work.
MURDERED-Ronan-body
You play as Ronan O’Connor, ex-con turned police detective on the trail of a serial murderer known as the Bell Killer. Much like the Origami Killer of ‘Heavy Rain’, this guy has a string of mysterious kills to his name, each time leaving his calling card. At the opening of the game, Ronan becomes the killer’s latest victim and wakes up to find his body laying dead next to him. He learns from a helpful ghost girl named Abigail that he is dead and unable to move on to the next life until he has settled his unfinished business.

Ronan realises that in order to move on and reunite with his dead wife in the afterlife, he will have to solve the case and find out who the Bell Killer is. As a detective in life, his new ghost skills in death reflect his strengths. He becomes able to read objects and affect people’s minds in order to learn information. As well as these more unique abilities, he learns a few other spiritual tricks such as walking through walls and possession. These skills come at a cost though, as the dead are unable to communicate with the living.

The game is a free roamer, but the story drives you to follow a set path in a similar way to ‘Arkham City’. You can at any time explore the town of Salem, but you feel little need to when the story and mystery is driving you to your next location. Your movements are also limited by consecrated walls and buildings that have been blessed in order to stop spirits from getting through. An open door or window solves the problem for you, but often they only become available when the story requires it.

The main reason you might want to explore is for the many collectibles hidden around the town. You can find information on the killer, yourself and your past, your deceased wife, your friends and colleagues as well as the town itself and even uncover a few local ghost stories. You will also meet a few other people whose lives recently ended and be able to help them solve their own problem and find a way to move on to the next life.

The main thrust of the game is the detective work. On finding a crime scene, Ronan will have to search around the area and find clues to help him figure out what went on. He can question people, influence the minds of the living, focus on objects to learn their secrets, and reconstruct memories to piece together the puzzles. This is made relatively easy as you don’t usually need to get too close to a clue before a prompt lets you know it’s there. You will often have to then pick out what the most relevant information is to correctly solve the case. This is one of the places that the game has a slight problem. Though you are meant to select the relevant clues and sometimes in a certain order, in a few places it feels more of a game of ‘guessing what was in the game designer’s head’, especially when the questions aren’t always clear about what they want from you. You are graded on your detective work with three cop badges. Choose correctly first time, you get three out of three. For each wrong guess, you lose a badge.
MURDERED-demon
Every so often, the sleuthing will be interrupted with some demon hunting. Though they are hunting for spirits to devour, you have to turn the tables on them. Abigail early on explains that demons are spirits who took too long to figure out why they hadn’t moved on. Now they only exist to eat newer ghosts. These stealthy, assassination sections remind you a little of the clicker sequences in ‘The Last of Us’. You have to keep out of the way, while the horrific, creepy creature blindly looks for its prey (you) and find a method of killing it. However, the tension in this game is much lower as the demons seem a lot less threatening than the zombies in the other game. Though the demons are lethal if they catch you, they are a lot easier to avoid, they move in a predictable pattern, and you don’t need any special equipment to deal with them. As long as Ronan sneaks up on them from behind, he can execute them with relative ease. He also has the added bonus of being able to see the demons through walls and hide in ghostly residue if he gets into trouble. As mentioned, these sections feel a little tacked on just to break up the routine gum-shoeing.
murdered soul suspect cat
It’s unfortunate that the game didn’t live up to its potential. Deep stories and interesting characters will keep people interested in games even if there isn’t a huge amount of action, but even that came up short. The tale in ‘Soul Suspect’ is gripping enough to have you see it through to the end – although the game is disappointingly short anyway – but with only a small number of characters and suspects introduced, the ending becomes quite predictable. With a few hiccups in the gaming experience itself, there’s not much to love about the game, but being able to possess and run about as a cat is arguably a highlight.

More Stuff We’d Like To See In The Simpsons: Tapped Out

    The_Cereal_is_the_Prize
The previous ‘What We Want To See’ on this game was quite a while ago now and we’re pleased as punch to see that some of the wishes have come true.
So, here we push our luck and ask that the rest of the stuff we wanted gets put into the game along with this new list here!

    Buildings

    Hal Roach Apartment

    HalRoachApartments tapped out
This building (which is meant to be released with Jacqueline Bouvier (Marge’s mother)) has been sitting in the game files for a long time. It might not be the most exciting building or character, but while we have it downloaded to our devices anyway, we may as well be allowed to use it!
    Jacqueline_Bouvier

    Marvin Monroe’s Family Therapy Center

    Dr._Monroe's_Family_Therapy_Center_(There's_No_Disgrace_Like_Home)
A setting for one of the earliest episode’s classic sequences with a character who has a lot of scope for tasks around town.

    Stonecutters Lodge

    Stonecutters
It would be great to have Number One voiced. A lot of Springfielders belong to this club, and it might be fun to see a task where Lenny gives commands to Mr Burns. Although, it may be more accurate to call them the ‘The Ancient Mystic Society of No Homers’.
    no homers

    Cockamamie’s

    Cockamamie's
They could still make the mall into an expansion! John is a character who should have appeared in more episodes. His main task has to be to ‘ZZZAAP’ people.
    John_Homer's_Phobia

    Temple Beth Springfield

    Temple_beth_springfield
And perhaps a few other of the Lower East Side’s Jewish businesses with Rabbi Hyman Krustofski.
    Jewish_walk_of_fameHyman_Krustofsky

    Characters

    Roy

    250px-Roy
    Whatever happened to Roy?

    Coyote

    space-coyote-the-simpsons
Homer’s spirit guide was as memorable an animal character as Stampy and opens up some pretty far out tasks.

    Hell’s Satans

    Hell's_Satans
At least Meathook and Ramrod anyway.

    Artie Ziff

    artie-ziff
Marge’s high school sweetheart who never really got over her.

    Jacques

    Jacques
    Another romantic distraction for Marge.

    Sam and Larry

    sam_larry
There’s not much these guys can do besides stumble around in a drunken stupor, but at least Barney won’t be so lonely.

    Ruth and Laura Powers

    ruth powers muscles simpsonsLaura_by_the_poolside
The rightful owners of the much misused brown house.

    Mr. Bergstrom

    mr bergstrom simpsons
Lisa’s fantastic teacher. Although, the running gag that she never sees him again might get ruined.

    Chester Lampwick

    chester lampwick gold house
Another character who deserved more episode appearances. He could come with his solid gold house.

    The Nerds

    nerds
    Benjamin, Doug and Gary.

    Charlie

    Charlie
Homer’s co-worker who often has runs of bad luck.

    Stewart

    Stewart
    Another of Homer’s co-workers.

    Medicine Woman

    Medicine_woman
One of her tasks would obviously be to point in directions.

    Decorations

    Volkswagon Beetle

    tall man small car
The only car this man could afford. (He should come with it)

    Gummi Venus De Milo

    gummi de milo
As it is in its display case, not stuck to a bum.

    Tasks

    Evil Homer

    evil homer dance
As Homer’s grave is now a decoration it just seems mad not to give Homer the task to dance on it.

One hour task for Drederick Tatum

    drederick
Maybe he could be another of the list of characters who fights with Homer.

    Features

    Better Character Locator

Is this too cheeky? They gave us a character locator to help us find the people faster, but it’s still not amazing. The biggest fault with it is that it doesn’t include characters that are on task. In one way that’s good, because you can go through everyone and put them on jobs and know that everyone is busy when the button disappears. In another way, it’s hugely frustrating if you want to find a busy character to see how much longer they’ve got until they finish what they are doing. It has become even more frustrating recently as they’ve stopped you from being able to find characters on quests by using the task menu, by replacing the ‘Do it’ button with a donut-spend-and-speed-up one.

    An Auto Collector

It might take some of the spirit out of the game to have the money and XP generated by your buildings automatically collected while you’re not playing, but it’s also helpful to those who can only log on once a day.
I’d probably lean towards the idea of keeping the collecting for players actively logging on and making them effort, but to re-use the Christmas idea where tapping on the elves house made the little helpers come out and grab everything for you. It should be a character task for perhaps some of the civil servants to be able to wander around and collect the ‘taxes’ from buildings, saving players from a lot of repetitive tapping in larger towns.

    Criminal Activity

There’s a lot of call for Sideshow Bob to become a proper character with tasks in the game. That might mean he needs a character to take his place as the random pop-up criminal. There are a few potential candidates. In the game’s original form it was Snake who was going to take that role until they decided to make him a proper character.
A new feature could be the best of both worlds. Criminals could all be permanent residents in the Penitentiary able to escape either at random times as they currently do, or with a task. While they are free they can perform tasks just like any other character earning cash and XP, but causing the players Righteousness Conformity bonus to drop. To get the conformity back, Wiggum, Lou and Eddie (perhaps Rex Banner too) could have tasks to bring them back in.
If you don’t choose to set them free, they can randomly escape and act just like Sideshow Bob currently does, letting you tap them for cash and capturing them.

    Block Story Review

    logo2
    PC (Steam)
    Released 25/4/2014

    7/10

‘Block Story’ is in an early stage of development at the time of writing this review, so hopefully some of the issues brought up will have been ironed out.

The game is sometimes described as ‘Minecraft crossed with Skyrim’, which is pretty apt. It also clues you in on the fact that this is going to be a serious time drain just as both of those games are.
    2014-05-02 13_24_54-Block Story
Like Minecraft your adventure involves finding and gathering resources in order to build structures. The best thing about this is that there are no set boundaries that you have to follow. As long as you can find the materials, the only limits are your own imagination. Running alongside the open world Lego box are RPG quests. As you explore, you will meet various characters who offer rewards for completing tasks that might involve gathering a certain amount of resources or killing a number of monsters. Fetch and carry quests and things that require specific locations don’t really come up as the nature of the game is to be able to take apart and rebuild the landscape as you see fit.

The game controls are fairly simple, but take a little getting used to, mainly when it comes to crafting. You can mine any block by holding the button down until it breaks apart for collection. You can then use the resources to make other items you might want by following your recipe book and using a crafting table (made by putting together four planks).
Crafting involves organising your collected items on the table in a layout that usually resembles what it will end up being. Rather than having a list of things that can be built from your current resources, you have to drag and drop to arrange them in the right order.
    2014-05-02 11_42_18-
You have limited room in your inventory for types of items. There are 29 slots, which seems like a lot, but they can fill up quickly while you explore. Fortunately, those 29 slots allow you to have an unlimited number of each resource. You will want to craft yourself some storage boxes at a home fairly early to stash things away for later.

At first the game may make you feel as though you are wandering aimlessly helping strangers out for no good reason. Once you figure out something you want to build, the game suddenly gets more interesting. It’s more about your imagination than following guidelines. Create your own projects rather than wait to be given one. Then you know that you need to hunt for certain materials and roughly how much of it. Having this self-given purpose to explore makes the game much more immersive than the NPCs could ever make it.
    2014-05-04 16_34_46-Block Story
Currently there is no mini-map in game, so finding your way is hard. (This feature will hopefully added in a future update.) This is particularly frustrating if you are trying to build a house (or castle/fort/boat/town/whatever), go exploring for resources, then can’t find your way back. You can again use your imagination to make exploration somewhat easier and more fun by being digging up blocks to build bridges or sign posts, where in most games you would have to follow a predesigned route. There is an inclusion of teleport devices that revolve around beds, but making beds and teleporters also requires resources which may not be that easy to gather. You will need them as the world is huge, stretching from heaven to hell and everything in between.

To make life a bit easier, all NPCs and animals spawn from ‘Animal Summon Blocks’. So whenever you find a quest giver you can grab their box and take them with you so you can be ready to talk to them again when you have done what they ask. Remember to put away your sword when you talk to friends, as the commands for ‘speak’ and ‘attack’ are the same. If you find some sheep summoning blocks, you’ll have a source of wool for your beds.
    2014-05-02 13_24_46-Block Story
Among the enemy monsters are snakes, tigers and various kinds of dragons. Some boss enemies can also be found, marked by dramatic music playing in their vicinity. Though the world is made up entirely of blocks, the creatures within it look a lot more realistic, which definitely sets it apart from Minecraft stylistically.

The game does involve a lot of grinding. Mining for resources can be time consuming. Pick-axes make the job faster but have limited uses before they disappear/break. It can be difficult to accomplish simple goals (like making a bed, when you have to chase down sheep across unknown territory using your bare hands to do minimal damage) with the limited tools available at the beginning.
    2014-05-02 14_42_09-Block Story
If the normal mode does get too much for a casual player however, there is a separate ‘creative’ mode where you can build what you want with infinite resources. On the other hand, for someone who finds the main game too easy, there is a ‘hardcore’ mode which gives the player limited lives and more dangerous enemies.

The game has a few problems that can be frustrating. Earthquakes happen from time to time that cause damage to the player and make mining/building a bit tricker for a short while. They rarely do much harm, but they happen a bit too frequently and become extremely irritating. There are also weather changes from sun to rain and day to night. The dark of night obviously makes seeing clearly more difficult. This would be less of a problem if the world streaming was better. You can’t see much landscape ahead of you, and often you might think you are about to run off a cliff edge when actually the ground simply hasn’t loaded yet.

Hopefully, these gripes will be ironed out in the future and are relatively minor when it comes to enjoying the game as a whole.

Recreating An Accurate Springfield in ‘The Simpsons: Tapped Out’ – Part 9

the_simpsons_springfieldThis section of the guide will be focusing on a few suburban homes.

    Skinner House

Although we once saw Skinner’s house as a creepy building on a hill near with a view of the school, it’s more recently been recognised as the building we have in game.

In an episode in which Nelson and the bullies lob expired coleslaw at the house, Nelson says that he left something special in Skinner’s birdbath. We never see it, but it’s good to know its there so we can place one as a decoration.
We also know that a Krusty Burger is located across the street behind the house.

    Van Houten House

Home to Milhouse and his parents. It seems to be fairly close to the Simpson home but probably not on the same street.

    Wiggum House

Ralph and Clancy live at 732 Evergreen Terrace, only a little way down the road from the Simpsons and Flanders.

    Sanjay’s House

Apu’s brother has a really nice home with a pool suitable for parties in the back garden. It should be within a minutes running distance from the Kwik-E-Mart.

    Prince Home

The home of Martin and his family is not in the game (yet?) but a suitable stand-in can be made of an orange house. Include his butterfly tent.

When Skinner and Krabappel first meet socially and begin their romance at Martin’s birthday party, we see Agnes poke her head over the fence. From this we can assume that Skinner lives next door to Martin, but it’s not obvious which side. One of the above images shows a house that looks like the Skinner home backing on to the Prince home.

    Bumblebee Man’s Home

A short drive down the road from a Krusty Burger is a white house where the Mexican entertainer lived. It fell down, but it could be rebuilt.

    Moleman’s House

Perhaps a pink house would suit Hans.

    Lovejoy House

    Frink’s House

Again, Frink’s is not actually in the game, but you can put together a substitute. I’ve used the Ultrahouse. It doesn’t have a canon place in Springfield as it existed as a replacement for the Simpson home in a Treehouse of Horror episode. The futuristic style suits Frink.

    Squidport

We see the grand opening of the Squidport in Season 7 Episode 17 – ‘My Sister, My Sitter’. It has recently been refurbished from the old Tentacle Cannery.
Many of the buildings in Tapped Out’s Squidport are seen in this episode as Homer and Marge walk past giving us the exact order of their placement.
Turban Outfitters, Just Rainsticks with a coffee cart out front, It’s A Wonderful Knife, My First Tattoo, Much Ado About Muffins, Crypto Barn, The Itchy and Scratchy Store, and Malaria Zone. Opposite the last couple of stores is Planet Hype. Between Hype and I&S store is a boardwalk fountain.
The Squidport seems to be next to a cliff, and located 1/2 a mile away from the hospital. I’m not sure how you’ll figure out what will represent a mile on your mobile screens, but it’s good data to have.

However, in true Springfield style, the position of the buildings seems to change within the episode, with one angle showing Just Rainsticks to be opposite It’s A Wonderful Knife! This kind of thing doesn’t make building an accurate town any easier.

springfield - homer vs 18th amendment
In this installment let’s look at some of Springfield’s Eateries. (Updates to this section on the way!)

    The Gilded Truffle

    Up, Up and Buffet

You’ll notice clearly that this themed restaurant has a clear view of the much more posh Truffle.

    Pimento Grove

    Java Server

    Gulp ‘N’ Blow

Although it’s possible for you to build a chain of these, I’d prefer to have just one – the one that Homer proposed to Marge outside of.

    Krusty Burger

Krusty Burger is a good filler as you can put them wherever you want to fill gaps. The gallery shows some of the ones that appear in the show.

    Nighthawk Diner

Six Reasons Why Donkey Kong is the Real Hero of the Super Mario world

    super-mario-donkey-kong-karting-car-racing-set-2
Mario is one of gaming’s most recognisable heroes. He’s the face of Nintendo and you can barely blink without a new game starring him and his friends being released.

It turns out though, it was all based on lies. Mario owes it all to Donkey Kong. Here is why:

    Mario’s First Appearance

    donkey kong original game

The first time we ever saw Mario was in 1981, when he was referred to only as Jumpman. In the game, players would guide Mario/Jumpman as he dodged barrels lobbed by a crazed gorilla named Donkey Kong who had kidnapped his girlfriend (and who the game was named after).

At first glance, it looks as though our hero Mario/Jumpman is doing the noble thing of saving damsels in distress that he becomes well known for in his own later games.

However, the often overlooked back-story is that Donkey Kong was Mario’s pet. No one knows exactly what went on, but DK escaped captivity after being abused by the plumber and grabbed Pauline (the girlfriend) on his way out.

It turns out that playing and beating this game is to take on the role of an animal abuser, whose goal is to recapture the beast he had made suffer.

    Mario’s Second Appearance

    donkey kong jr poster
The second game to feature Mario was the sequel in 1982 ‘Donkey Kong Jr’. This time though, rather than secretly being a bad guy, he was clearly the game’s villain.

This time you played the role of Donkey Kong Jr. Mario had locked Donkey Kong up again and it was up to the ape’s son to save him.
The game is in some ways a reversal of the first, now with the ape dodging the obstacles that the man puts in his way. But we clearly have the image of Mario as the trouble maker in all this.

    The Prequel

Donkey kong circus - game & watch
In 1984, Game & Watch brought another insight into the past relationship of Donkey Kong and Mario with ‘Donkey Kong Circus’.
It turns out that the plumber had captured the ape in order to train him as a juggling act.

In the game, Mario forced the poor gorilla to balance on a barrel, while juggling pineapples and avoiding flaming torches. Between burns and pricked fingers, it’s no wonder DK wanted to escape and use the barrels for ironic revenge.

    The Remake

donkey kong remake ending game boy
In 1994, the original game was remade and expanded upon. At the end it showed Mario defeat DK and take him back to the Mushroom Kingdom, to the very place that he begins his own adventure in his own 1983 adventure.

Not only was ‘Mario Bros’ a spin off of the games made famous by Donkey Kong, but it begins exactly where they end.

Mario Piggy-backs a Monkey Yet Again

Yeah… a gorilla is an ape, not a monkey, but ‘monkey’ is a funnier word.

After Mario became famous in his own right for what could well be some of the most well known and loved games of all time – despite them being spin-offs that he would have never had if Donkey Kong had not provided him the opportunity – he later became the star of another extremely popular franchise.
    Super_Mario_Kart_screen_shot
Mario Kart is the go-to karting game series for console players. Usually, if someone thinks fun, party, go-kart video game, they think Mario Kart. (I personally vouch for the infinitely superior Crash Team Racing, but we’re talking popular vote here).

The original 1992 ‘Super Mario Kart’ came about a little by accident. Nintendo were originally designing a non-franchise linked kart racing game that starred a random guy who used oilcans and bananas as weapons to slow down his rivals.

Once bananas we’re mentioned, it simply made sense that Donkey Kong be the star.
Once it was established that Donkey Kong was the game’s hero, Nintendo invited Mario and his Mushroom Kingdom gang along too. Mario then usurped the title from it’s deserved and rightful owner.
Even worse, DK didn’t even appear in the finished game as a racer. Donkey Kong Jr was let in, but not his elder.

    Cranky Kong

Cranky Kong - Donkey Kong Country
Perhaps Donkey Kong’s missing place in ‘Super Mario Kart’ was due to age.
In 1994′s ‘Donkey Kong Country’, it was revealed that the original Donkey Kong is not the same one that we recognise today.
The Donkey Kong that Mario forced to perform, kept in a cage and beat up numerous times later aged and passed on his name to his son. Now referred to as Cranky Kong, his grandson, Donkey Kong III is the one we see in the latest kart and sports titles.

Young Donkey Kong has always been a hero, though sometimes the relationship he has with Mario is strained, it is understandable when you consider how the plumber treated his grandfather!

Recreating An Accurate Springfield In ‘The Simpsons: Tapped Out’ – Part 7

Christmas Town Simpsons Season 25 Episode 8
In this next Christmassy part of the guide, we can look at some town planning.

As mentioned before, you should think about including areas that will be home to similar buildings.
I have put together a few zones including:
    – A suburban area/Evergeen Terrace/Pressboard Estates for the various character houses.
    – Downtown Springfield
    – Shopping District
    – Upper Class businesses
    – Wealthy Homes
    – Olde Town
    – Forest
    – Cypress Creek
    – Jebediah Springfield Park

You don’t have to do it the way that I have, but I feel that my arrangement is a good approximation of how it should be.

At the moment, a number of buildings are not in the areas that I would like them to eventually be. My hope is that more land is included in a future update so I can expand.
For example, I want Cletus’ farm to be in a shanty town at the top of Springfield Falls along with a few brown houses.

I also want to put together an ‘out of town’ area, for the Casino and Sunsphere.

Currently, O’Flanagans pub is in the precise location that I would put Maison Derriere if it was ever released.

You may also notice that some buildings already featured in this guide have had a few changes made to them.
