The Justice League That Could Have Been

With the Justice League movie seeming to be much more than a rumour nowadays, fans are gossiping about who could or will be playing the superheroes.

Well, Cracking Ace doesn’t know, but we do bring you a selection of actors/actresses who almost got the roles in the past. We’ll leave it to you to decide how well the combinations would work.

We like this one:

Batman
Alec Baldwin, Jeff Bridges, Emilio Estevez, Matthew Broderick, Kevin Costner, Tom Cruise, Michael J. Fox, Harrison Ford, Robert Downey Jr., Kevin Spacey, Patrick Swayze, Dennis Quaid, Kurt Russell, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Mel Gibson, Charlie Sheen, Bill Murray, Pierce Brosnan, Tom Selleck, Daniel Day-Lewis, Tom Hanks, Kevin Kline and Bruce Willis were all options for Tim Burton’s Batfilms.
Jake Gyllenhaal or Cillian Murphy could have been in place of Christian Bale in the Nolan Batmovies.

Superman
Nicolas Cage, Will Smith, Ben Affleck, Josh Hartnett, Ashton Kutcher were all options for Superman reboots after Christopher Reeves outings.
Sylvester Stallone and Arnold Schwarzenegger both hoped for the original role, but Arnie didn’t make it and Sly was refused by Marlon Brando, who didn’t want to play his father.

Wonder Woman
In Joss Whedon’s unfinished effort rumour had it that Mariah Carey, Sandra Bullock, Charisma Carpenter and Catherine Zeta-Jones were possible candidates for the part.

Robin
Marlon Wayans and Kiefer Sutherland were both offered roles as Robin in Tim Burton’s Batman movies before he decided not to include the character. Sutherland passed it up, not wishing to wear tights similar to that of Burt Ward.
Christian Bale auditioned for the part in Batman Forever. Leonardo DiCaprio screen tested and Matt Damon was considered.

Green Lantern
Nathan Fillion somehow lost out to Ryan Reynolds, though he will be voicing him in a some animated movies. Sort of a consolation prize.
Jack Black was also considered for a movie which would more spoof the genre than be part of a series.

The Flash
Ryan Reynolds, Chris Pine, Bradley Cooper, Ryan Kwanten, Matthew Fox have all been considered as options for the part. Reynolds was the favourite before he was cast as Green Lantern.

Aquaman
Santiago Cabrera was cast as Aquaman in a Justice League film called Justice League: Mortal that never happened.

J’Onn J’Onzz / Martian Manhunter

Hugh Keays-Byrne is an option to play the part, but David Ogden Stiers portrayed the alien in a low budget TV pilot of JLA.

Plastic Man
The Wachowskis planned a movie based on the stretchy super hero casting their lead from The Matrix as the title character – Keanu Reeves.

The Joker
David Bowie, Tim Curry, John Lithgow, James Woods, John Glover, Ray Liotta, and Robin Williams were all possible candidates for Tim Burton.
Frank Sinatra wanted to play the part in the 60s series starring Adam West. The part had already been cast however.

Lex Luthor
Robert Downey Jr. and Bradley Cooper have been rumoured as candidates for Superman’s arch rival.

The Riddler
Robin Williams has been a firm favourite to put on the green suit for many years.
Mark Hamill and Damon Wayans were also considered.

Two-Face
Billy Dee Williams played Harvey Dent in Tim Burton’s first Batman film. Had the series continued, he would no doubt have been called on to portray the alter ego Two-Face. With the change of director came the casting choice of Tommy Lee Jones.
Other options were Clint Eastwood and Mel Gibson.

Scarecrow
If Joel Schumacher had been able to make a third film after ‘Batman and Robin’, he would have cast Nicolas Cage as the Scarecrow, who would have used his fear toxin to force the dynamic duo into believing all their past enemies had returned.

This combo probably wouldn’t be so great, but we’re tempted by it anyway:
